Why does life happen so fast?

After spending spring break away from the tiny little community that is home at St. Michael's College, and fretting over what the hell major I want to be, I have come to the conclusion that I need your help. In a nut shell, pretty much the only major I have interest in pursuing is French, with a secondary education license. If that doesn't work out (especially since I hate the French class I'm taking right now), I'm uber fucked. So I was looking at Fordham's website, cause that was my second choice after St. Mike's, and they have majors that are so much more interesting to me, such as International Political Economy.

Also, I am in love and lust with New York City (where Fordham is). Vermont is the second whitest state in the nation, and Colchester is so tiny (yeah, I know, Kirksville sucks more), and I'm just so used to more "real world". St. Mike's is such a community-oriented place that sometimes I feel detached from the rest of the world. I love all my St. Mike's friends, and going to Fordham would mean having to quit the fire department, which I love more than I ever thought possible. I know I would make new friends, but I'm not sure I want to start all over.

And, the icing on the cake, I applied to be in a Theme House next year with 3 of my friends. If I went to Fordham, the group would not have enough people to fill the suite, and I don't know what that would mean, and everyone would be really mad at me for ruining their housing.

My mommy says it doesn't really matter what your major is, seeing as how she got a B.S. in math and then a Masters in religion and now she works for a non-profit organization. But I can't seem to decide if I should stay at St. Mike's for the awesome community and so-so majors, or transfer to Fordham (or maybe even SLU) for awesome majors and so-so community (but certainly awesome friends, eventually). Thus, I would like to know what you think.

take it from someone who changed her school august 1st like an idiot. i am at tulsa for the awesome majors, and what i thought was so-so community but ended up being amazing! SMS would have been amazing community up from and so-so majors. You make your surroundings what you want them to be, but you can't change the basics of the school that you are at. I dunno if that helped. Best of luck to you Miryam!

Most new york schools (especially Fordham) are extremely liberal and will change you if you are not. My cousin went there, payed a shit ton of money, and got a degree in something she can't use. If you aren't going to get a degree you are going to use, save your money and don't go to college.

don't go to slu. if you go anywhere, go somewhere different. who wants to experience college in st. louis? not me. nothing new there. sucks to have to make a decision like that though. from the day i spent there, fordham seems like a pretty cool place and i'm sure you'll have just as much fun there as in vermont. like steph said, you make your surroundings what you want them to be.

i totally agree...surroundings and all that jazz...you'll have fun no matter where you are...and your undergraduate degree doesn't really matter...or so i'm told...kinda hopin thats true so that i can just pick the quickest major that will allow me to get out in 4 years so i don't have to pay up the shit hole...

I also think that surroundings are what you make them....and your undergrad degree isn't that important, especially if you are going to grad school. I think you should stay in vermont. ^__^

i disagree with the whole your undergraduate degree doesn't count becuase it is what will get you the job that you're going for, otherwise, why would we be spending all this time and money in college if in the end it really isn't going to matter? Some jobs out there just need an undergrad degree and that's what people will be living their lives off of.. example: me as a nurse.. yep undergrad is going to get me in a hospital working on people and that's what i want to do, sure I'll go to grad school eventually to specialize in something, but your degree does matter alot just think of all the jobs that don't require master's degrees and it will put things in perspective

sure, steph, a major like pre-med certainly makes a difference. but if you're going to have a major like english or theater or even math, for example, what will that really do for you? the main thing to figure out is, what kind of future career are you looking at? one in which college isn't that important (i.e. theater), one where college is the end of needed education (primary education, i think), or one that will take you to more school (like... scientist or something).

that was a little long and convoluted. you ought to go visit fordham for a weekend or something (if you haven't already). i would just stress giving your decision a lot of time and consideration.

i agree with pretty much everything. surroundings, situations, and life are really what you make of them. it sounded like you really liked the beauty of vermont despite the small community (from what i've read at least). majors do matter in life...just in a small way. they help you specialize or know more about the field you're interested in. for example, i don't need to be at college to be a writer, but it helps in the practical world of writing (ie-media, journalism, advertising, etc) it also helps me improve my skills and learn more about the field that i didn't know before.
however, your case is a little different. foreign relations and politics and stuff is kinda like the nursing thing that steph was talking about. you should start exploring that field asap if that's what you want to do. it sounds that if you don't want to be a french teacher in the future, you should definitely take a good hard look at fordham or see what other solutions your school can offer you.
i wish you luck! it's hard, but make the best decision for your future that you can. because as fun and social as college is, its purpose is to prepare you for your future.

I don't think your surroundings are what you make them. I am sure that is true to an extent, but you can't make a shithole not a shithole. It will always be a shithole. Sure you can have fun in a shithole, but then think of how much more fun you could have in a nonshithole town.

I think you should go to SLU as well just because I am selfish and want to see you!

But I also agree with Amanda. Going to a school that is not in St. Louis is better than going to a school in St. Louis for sure. If I wasn't so close with my family and if I wasn't dating Tom I would totally be transfering to a school somewhere awesome instead of Mizzou.

And as for the friends thing, I never left Nerinx because I had good friends there. I will probably regret that my whole life. I should have left Nerinx and friends are a stupid reason - you will always have friends wherever you go. And look at how close all the Nerinx girls are even though we are all so far apart. If you have really close friends you could still be close. Me and you don't get to see each other and we are still best friends.

Here's the thing: you have found awesome friends. That will not be true at every school. The people here at Loyola fucking suck ass. Seriously. What is the deal with the major opions at St. Mikes? Is there like 5 majors or can you not make up your mind? Even more than that, people get in to med school who don't major in bio or pre-med at college. You just need to keep two things in mind: What is best for my carreer and what is best for my happiness, because the bottom line is happiness.

pip, i agree with everybody here and i really like what george said about what makes you happy. sure kirksville is a poop town but the people here make going to truman so worth it. also, im a theatre major and i have no fucking clue what im going to do with that, but it makes me happy and thats what im worried about right now. i also have a psych minor which i am really getting involved in but still that is also something that makes me happy. so go with that. and i love you.
