Well, I am now a little more than half-way through the book, and I have to say it's pretty good. I am thoroughly enjoying myself reading it. Although things do look as grim as usual. Generally I like it.
I got my copy at midnight, but had to work today so I havent even opened it. I probably wont read it till next week. I am not a big reader. Don't actually know why I bought the book. /shrug.
same here i worked a nine hour day. i got home at about 4 last night and i read til 7 and then i had to start getting ready for work. then worked nine hours. i was originally planning on staying home tonight to finish it...but there is a HUGE party that i have to go to. mikes taking me. and for once in my life harry potter will take back seat to my social life. then when i get home ill probably be able to read some more cause im pretty good at reading while wasted. then i have to work another 9 hour day.
How long could it possibly take to read? I mean its like 600 pages, a page takes about 20-30 seconds. So that is like 300ish minutes which is a whopping 5 hours. LOTR ROTK ESE is like 4 hours and 10 min. I spent 5 min reading and got to page 12 before I was interuppted. And Rowling already did the thing I hated the most about the previous books. The lady sucks at writing tangents, and just wasted 7 pages of my life with one. I want that 3 min of my life back and ive hardly gotten into it.
After hearing my aunt Mary (who had an advance copy) complaining about how much JKR really needs a new editor, I decided not to read the book (especially after realizing just how right she was about the need for a more strict editor after reading OotP).
But after reading some spoilers online, I'm almost tempted to read it just for clarification of some of said spoilers.
Don't read the rest of this comment if you don't want any spoilers, even though I'll try to keep them vague. You've been warned.
After hearing about a certain DADA teacher's not-so-nice choices, I want to see if there's room for him to remain as complex a character as he's been in the past, or if JKR has just ruined all that complexity by making him live up to the expectations everybody has had for him all along in the series.
Also a certain relationship between two characters, from what I've heard, seems like it might be at least somewhat amusing.
WARNING: MAY POSSIBLY GIVE CLUES TO THE END, SO DON'T READ UNLESS YOU HAVE FINISHED AND KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. Well, i've finished now, and it wasn't as bad as number 5. I agree with you, conman, about the DA teacher thing. I do have to admit that I expected better of that person after everything...that is to say that I didn't think that person would do what they did, and was disappointed that JKR just went for a simple solution by using this person to do what he did. When the person who died, actually did die, I realized that of course this person had to die, but I was a little surprised at first (call me niave). oh, and let me add, i hate malfoy even more now. he is a spineless little worm, who should be crushed...by anyone.
WARNING: CONTAINS NO ACTUAL SPOILERS! DON'T READ UNLESS EXTREMELY BORED!
so it completely shocked me when harry fell down upon his knees and expressed his undying love and affection for ella (page 134, for those who missed it). but it wasn't too surprising when ron tripped and fell and uttered "tell sarah i love her..." and then died. but i really did expect the part when malfoy is tormenting a first year and reba swoops in and kicks major ass. it was as good as the part when anna makes an appearance to tell how harry potter is satan's work. and then carolyn and amanda showed up late to the class that katie was teaching (ahhh! bogarts!!! miss katie, help!). but that was before keegan snuck out to hogsmeade and jacquelyn didn't do her spell homeowrk on time, right? but then marge and hovis and mrm snapped some sense into everyone with a kickass wizards' tri-duel (truel?) (okay, so i included everyone who was at the party, right? oh wait...me!) and then missy caught the golden snitch to win the cup and everyone clapped and cheered and had a general good time.
anyway, it was super good. maybe one day i'll read it. (keegs, i'm waiting...)
FOR GOD'S SAKE WHY WOULD YOU READ THIS THREAD IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE BOOK (AKA SPOILERS)
This doesn't leave Snape one-sided at all. Rowling loves to lead her readers to the wrong conclusion (ex: Draco's mission was not to free his father after all). Snape and Dumbledore planned this.
And another thing: was anyone else fully unconvinced by the various romances?
SPOILERS: RON IS A PRAT. after this book, i have lost all respect for him and utterly loathe him for what he did to hermione. plus all the details JKR gave were surprising for a children's book. I also very much agree with Jack's theory that Dumble and Snape may have previously discusses this very situation. Snape also was left with no decision to kill Dumble b/c of surrounding Death Eaters. I do believe Dumble is dead though...I'll reread the scene and look more carefully for clues though. to conclude: Ron and Malfoy=pathetic Snape=?
HEY! Don't dis my boy! Finally the world knows that Draco's 'slimy-ness' is just a defense mechanism. His teasing was never even very clever for gods' sake, Harry's just too sensitive. And whiny. Plus Draco is growing up under very stressing circumstances. Being told that the only way to prove himself is to kill people, for one.
Oh and by the way whoever it is that plays Draco in the movies does not nearly do him justice. A new Draco would be the only good news about making movies 5-7 with different actors.
well, malfoy isn't evil or anything. he couldn't kill dumble in the end. although his stunt on the train to harry was not very nice. the romances in general weren't very satisfying. Ron was a jerk. Ginny was not very convincing...maybe with their past, but still far too convienient. And when Harry ended it, she was far too calm. Lupin and Tonks? Just odd...but nice in the end.
i don't know if i'll be reading this book. i guess at some point i might, but right now it doesn't seem likely. why? because i read the inside cover, with the summary of the book. and you know, if i wanted to read a book about teenagers and romance, i could read a book about that. if i really wanted to read a book about people at home while a war is going on, hell, i could probably read gone with the wind. so i think that when i want to read a book about wizards, i'll go read lotr or something.
But the point of Harry Potter is that the magic is just mixed in with regular life. LOTR doesn't really move me because it doesn't seem real. People read Harry Potter because it seems possible (for them to suddenly become wizards, of course).
Although it's true that if your goal was to read good romances, stay far away from HP.
And back to defending Draco... if Harry had found Draco spying in his compartment, wouldn't he have done much the same? Although I will admit that Harry probably wouldn't have used physical violence. Maybe a good Bat-Bogey Hex instead.
touche, Jack. (pronounced too-shay...i don't know how to spell) anyhoo, harry would have punished malfoy, but the physical violence was uncalled for. it seems very brutish. stomping on someones face doesn't seem very civilized...in fact, it doesn't seem like an action that a nice person would do at all. therefore, malfoy is not a nice person. although, we do see that he has some heart by not killing dumble.
i think you are all wrong about ron...hes cool....yea hes a hypocrite but i suppose if i was his age and everyone around me was getting action including my little sister i think i'd probably be suckin face with someone all the time too...i would also like to point out that he redeems his assholeness towards herminone at so-and-so's funeral if youd just read carefully...
malfoys a cuntflap but not completely evil
snape is still open for discussion...but they must need a spy on the inside pretty damn bad to kill off *censored* (not that it really matters)
dumbledore had to die (sorry i gave up on censorship) cause then it'll get to parallel the whole obi wan kanobi mentor dying complex....which is always cool..cause...well...its star wars...obviously...
