Dailee Help!
Well, Dailee you know just about everything about piercings so I need your help. Recently (the past two weeks or so) my navel piercing has been acting weird. If I put pressure around the opening, sometimes this yellowish liquid comes out like puss or something. The thing is it the area is not hot, it is now swollen, it is not red, or anything. I wasn't sure if it was infected or not because I thought infections were hot, swollen, and red. I don't know I have been cleaning with Bactine and it's been three months since the piercing.
I'm wondering if it might have anything to do with the soap I am using. Another thing is about two weeks ago I got it caught on my bed and it pulled it a little. I don't know if that had anything to do with it. I also went swimming in a lake and I wonder if that may have anything to do with it (however my roommate also jumped in the lake with me and hers is doing fine). Anyway, I was wondering if you knew anything about this and could help me out. Thanks

.....i also took a bath in trash, i wonder if that has anything to do with is. i also went to tibet, i wonder if that has anything to do with it. i also ripped it out, i wonder if that has anything to do with it.
jesus hovis. wtf has that piercing been through?
word verification: trdconic
reminds me of turdconic, which could be like iconic, except with a turd
Seriously I clean it everyday. It hasn't really been through more than my roommates has been through and hers is fine. We both got ours pierced together.
Maybe it has something to do with me having sensitive skin. I did have to get my ears pierced like four different times because it kept getting infected because I was allergic to the metal that was being put in.
HEY HEY. Mr.Pharmacy-Major whippin' out the KNOWLEDGE.
actually obtuse, that isn't necessarily the case with piercings. hovis, the yellow fluid is lymph fluid which is 100% completely normal for a 3 month-old navel ring. in addition, a navel piercing is just a modified surface piercing which means that it takes an extra long time to heal (navels take a year to fully heal) and they pose a much greater risk of rejection. also hovis, at this stage of healing, you shouldn't be washing your piercing with soap and water . antibacterial soap should only be used for about a month, to prevent infection during the primary stages of healing. the absolute best thing you can do for your irritated navel is sea salt water soaks. buy or order some sea salt from a health store and add 1 tsp of salt to 1 cup of warm water. hold the cup over the piercing so it forms a seal, and keep it on there for about a minute. this with allow the lymph to drain and it helps with irritation. this can be done up to 2 times a day. i hope this helps, and don't worry, your belly button is fine!
Ah thanks so much Dailee! You are so smart. How long should I continue treating it before I change my ring?
oh and to make you feel better, i have had lymph leakage in my 17 month old septum piercing because i stretched it from a 14g to a 10g. pretty much anytime you put a strain on a piercing (stretching, bumping it, sleeping on it funny ect.) there is the big possibility of lymph leakage, and soreness.
well i would wait until the lymph stops leaking before changing the ring (it is a ring right?). having a curved barbell or a j-bar in the piercing can be much better because it allows the jewlery to be flush to your body, and that way it gets caught on less stuff. i say wait until you are home for the summer and get it changed at a piercing place with a good reputation. that way you know the jewlery will be of high quality.
lymph fluid is dead immune system cells is it not? so nick is right.
i didn't say that he was incorrect. i said that just because there is lymph fluid that doesn't automatically mean that there is an infection. oh and by the way, lymph is NOT pus. they are different. i didn't think i was being rude to nick or anything. nick - i was just trying to tell hovis everthing i knew about surface piercings.
flea - don't comment if you are just going to throw peanuts.
unless they are honey roasted b/c those are the best kind
i'm partial to almonds
kashews for sarah! and they have to be aimed into my mouth or my hands so i can put them in my mouth...
no nuts for me please.
the first thing that came to my mind was "MARRGRET! (i tried to spell it the way it is said) QUIT THROWIN BANANA PEELS!!"
Pus is dead white blood cells. Lymph is extraneous fluid. When lymph is comming out, that means that the blood has been channeled away from that spot so there will be no leakeages of blood and that the body has recently fought off a MINOR infection at that site. The funcion of the lymph system is to divert blood that has been lost in capillaries back to the blood stream and to provide a network of channels for the immune system to move through the body.
